What kind of women use a doula? Some of my varied clients have included...
A married couple in their forties expecting their first child. They'd read in "The Expectant Father" about the benefits of doula support. They wanted the support of a woman that's done this before to be there for support and comfort measures, and in case of any unforeseen complications. As it turns out this mom was denied an epidural due to back problems and labored beautifully, unmedicated with the support of her husband and I, for hours until the baby would not descend during pushing due to a malposition of the head. Dad said It was an experience of a lifetime!
A fellow doula and her husband expecting their third child and wanting an out of hospital birth with a midwife. This birth turned into a hospital birth due to the baby, actually being twins! Due to mom's determination and advocacy, both were born vaginally at full term and without any bedrest.
A single inmate giving birth to her second child after a traumatic first birth. An empowering birth of a large baby helped increase the confidence of this mom.
A mom that wanted a vaginal birth after her first child was born by cesarean (VBAC). What a joy to attend this birth and witness this woman's strength. Go VBAC mommas!
Another mom in her twenties that was a sexual abuse survivor and was giving birth without any support people. She wanted the support of a doula to help her cope with labor. She ended up very proud of what she'd accomplished.
A professional couple in their forties expecting their first child who sought me out after friends told them repeatedly that they couldn't have done it without their doula. They had a textbook first labor with an epidural and a 7lb baby.
A second time mom having a water birth at home with her older child present. She wanted doula support for her and her husband from someone who supports her choices and would not bring fears into her birth space.
A single third time mom in her forties, who was escaping an abusive relationship and planning a cesarean due to a medical problem. She wanted me there to help calm her, & her mother & daughter & take photos. I met them at the hospital on the scheduled day, to provide information, advocacy and support during the pre-op time, surgery, and recovery.
A married adoptive mom now expecting their first biological child.
Another couple in their twenties, expecting a first child. They wanted help using hypnosis for their labor to avoid drug exposure to mom and baby. They labored at home for a good while and then had a short smooth labor and birth that astounded the nurses.
A very experienced couple in their thirties having their 6th child who wished to have an unmedicated birth in a squatting position after being on bedrest for weeks for preterm labor.
